Start where you stand
Berton Braley’s Start Where You Stand is one of my favourite poems, and it’s a fitting choice for my inaugural blogpost because it reminds us to launch ourselves into whatever we want to achieve, no matter where we are on the road to our destination. It encourages us to free ourselves from the chains of past failures and embrace the future by acting now, rather than languishing in procrastination.
Landed Mermaid’s primary starting point is health – diet, fitness and mind. I believe in eating food that we were designed to eat, keeping fit in ways that challenge the body without placing excessive demands on it, and improving brain function through various strategies including stress management. Valid clues lie in observing how our ancestors lived, while taking advantage of the best that science has to offer and understanding that there is a highly individual element to everyone’s path to wellness.
It is also worth remembering that health is only one part of optimal living. If you’re in excellent health but bereft of any meaningful relationships or feeling completely unfulfilled, then ultimately a wash-board stomach or an impressive performance in the gym count for nothing. So while there’ll be lots of health-related content on this site, you can also expect frequent forays into other areas.
